In these days, in cooperation with our partner, the Swedish company Klimator, we have completed a pilot implementation of road weather information system METIS * for three Swedish regions.
Dispatchers of winter road maintenance from the Västra Götaland, Södermanland and Västmanland regions now have a unique, practice-proven tool for decision support. The system now integrates one hundred of local road weather stations. Furthermore, detailed road weather forecast is available for all three regions, based on the MDSS / SSWM system.
The Maintenance Decision Support System (MDSS), respectively Support System for Winter Maintenance (SSWM) forecasts the road condition and road surface temperature for selected Swedish roads, for individual sections with length of 1 kilometre and up to 16 hours in advance. The system thus provides enough time to prepare the treatment plan for roads in the region, to prepare the machinery, personnel and materials. An important advantage of the system is precisely targeted forecast to short road sections, which allows maintenance to proceed selectively. It is proven that the selective maintenance (selective salting) reduces the financial demands of winter maintenance and also the negative environmental impact.
Klimator is a knowledge-based company linked to the University of Gothenburg. Since 1999 the company has been working with consultancy work within applied climatology, especially regarding road weather and intelligent transport systems (ITS).
The company CROSS Zlín focuses on production and development of technologies for road traffic. Since its founding in 1994, the company gathers experience in four areas of intelligent transportation systems and technologies: traffic control, traffic flow detection and weighing vehicles in motion, weather systems and parking systems.
