A complete road weather information system – from weather stations to the dispatcher prediction module – helps to increase safety and at the same time to optimize maintenance costs thanks to the timely and effective treatment of roads in the winter.

To maintain the usability of roads, it is essential to ensure timely and adequate treatment. Thanks to the predictions of the dispatcher module, maintenance is directed to specific locations to treat dangerous situations at the optimal time. This enables maintenance of an even larger area at an optimal condition.

COST SAVING

Targeted winter maintenance, based on current on-line weather station info and a forecasting module, allows for the planning of winter maintenance. Efficient use of resources can then be achieved. CROSS developed an index which evaluates the performance of winter maintenance and its associated costs.

METIS is a unique software system for presenting road weather data and information focusing on the current and future situation on the roads. METIS provides a comprehensive overview of the weather in real time.

The latest (fourth) generation of METIS brings many new features. Great emphasis is now placed on the status map, where a variety of meteorological data can be displayed to support the spatial weather perception. New additions are an info panel, and a realtime view of cloud cover and precipitation.

DATA VALIDATION

Validation of meteorological data is crucial for the maintenance decision support system. Data quality and availability is essential for the immediate data interpretation by the dispatcher, and also for all related systems which use data from meteorological stations for further processing (e.g. variable speed regulation, forecast models).

Wrong decisions can be made about winter maintenance because of invalid or missing data that can lead to unnecessary overpricing of maintenance or to neglection of maintenance with an obvious impact on traffic safety.

Validation is necessary for two basic reasons

service engineer.

Advanced data validation is ensured routinely by CROSS Pearer software that allows the running of scheduled checks as well as on-demand checks. It also includes a sophisticated system of notifications to inform service support and supervising technology operation.

CASE STUDY ROAD NETWORK MONITORING IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Systematic installation of a road weather station network in the Czech Republic began in the mid‑nineties. Currently, the Czech road network is equipped with more than 500 units. 200 of those stations are either CrossMet or CrossMet Lite. Data from other manufacturers are integrated into the system and presented via METIS 4. The total number of stations is constantly growing.

This network of meteorological stations currently monitors about 56,000 km of roads throughout the Czech Republic and in many cities such as the capital city of Prague. METIS and related modules (SSWM, WMi) is used as the national manager of motorways and class 1 roads (Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic) and a number of other entities (cities and regional authorities) and private companies (e.g. technical services). Currently, the system is used by over 900 individual professional users.
